Stress and Hair Loss: Understanding Telogen Effluvium and How to Recover

7 min readMarch 5, 2026

Noticed a sudden increase in shedding 2–3 months after a stressful event? This is telogen effluvium — and the good news is it's almost always reversible.

What Is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is the medical term for a specific type of hair loss characterized by sudden, diffuse shedding across the entire scalp. Unlike androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss), which causes gradual thinning concentrated at the crown and part line, telogen effluvium causes an abrupt increase in daily hair shedding — often 200–400+ hairs per day compared to the normal 50–100.

The condition occurs when a physiological or psychological stressor causes a large proportion of hair follicles to simultaneously shift from the active growth phase (anagen) into the resting phase (telogen). Approximately 2–3 months later, these follicles shed their hairs, resulting in the characteristic shedding episode.

Common Triggers

The most common triggers for telogen effluvium include: major illness (including COVID-19, which has been associated with significant post-infection hair loss in many women), surgery, childbirth, rapid or extreme weight loss, severe psychological stress, nutritional deficiencies (particularly iron, zinc, and protein), and hormonal changes including starting or stopping hormonal contraceptives.

The Recovery Process

The most important thing to understand about telogen effluvium is that it is almost always self-limiting and reversible. Once the triggering stressor is removed or resolved, the hair growth cycle typically normalizes within 3–6 months, and full regrowth is usually achieved within 6–12 months.

Supporting recovery involves: addressing any nutritional deficiencies (particularly ferritin and iron, zinc, and protein), implementing stress management strategies, optimizing sleep, and being patient. The regrowth process is slow — new hairs grow at approximately 1 cm per month — so visible improvement takes time even after the shedding has stopped. Consider ashwagandha supplementation to support stress resilience during recovery.
